The Best Flashlights For Any Camping Scenario
Today we are talkin about a simple and often unthought-of topic, which is flashlights.
Flashlights are those magical devices we don’t think about until the only one we brought is filled with dead batteries.
When looking at different light sources, it’s common to think that all of them are the same. In a way, your right, they will all give you light. But most are very cheaply made and won’t be consistently reliable when you’re outdoors.
TIP: My biggest recommendation for anyone is to ALWAYS bring multiple sources of light. For me, I am often carrying around 5-6 different light sources.
Why flashlights are just amazing:
Your flashlight has many more uses than one. My favorite way to use a flashlight is as my improvised lightsaber.
Ok seriously, a flashlight is a great tool that you MUST have in all gear lists. Having a reliable light source can be a light saver when you are on the move at night
A few key components to look for in a flashlight:
- Metal Casing: Having a metal casing around the light assures you that when you drop it, you won’t break the light and render it unless. Although the plastic housings are great, I find that the switch mechanisms get broken more often in them.
- Lens Type: There are a few lens types you can get in the light. Most often you’ll either find plastic or a glass lens. The best choice in these two is the glass because they are usually thicker and are more durable than the plastic lenses.
- Bulb Brightness: This one is often a catch 22., because if you get a brighter light (higher lumens) your battery life will be shorter but, if the light is dimmer then you’ll get a much longer battery life. So I like to have a few lights of different brightnesses. I’ll stay with lights of 400 lumens or brighter.
Use Them for Your Protection
A cool way a strong flashlight can be used in an emergency is as a baton in an emergency (think a tactical style flashlight). This light is going to be robust and will defiantly protect you in 99% of survival situations. I’d say this light is one piece of gear to add to the zombie apocalypse preparedness stash.
Many flashlights (handhelds) can start a fire by carefully breaking the glass around the metal filament inside the bulb. Then grabbing some dry tender and placing on top of the light end and (hopefully) walla you have a fire!! For this, I’d recommend buying any cheap $1 light you can find. Primarily because of this method of fire starting will destroy the flashlight and then it will be useless. Just remember always to have many additional lights handy, and you shouldn’t have a problem.
Flashlights Could Be Used In SOS:
You can use your flashlights as a way to get the attention of others at night or on a cloudy day. Having a light that is bright enough (800+ lumens) could easily save your life when you are in a rescue position.
TIP: To perform an SOS signal with your flashlight is a sequence of three short flashes, three long flashes, three short flashes.
So after showing off a few cool ways you can use your flashlight below are what I believe are the best ones you can buy. Although there are many lights out there, I wanted to stick to the tactical style because they will stand the test of time. “God forbid” you have a hand full of flashlights, and they all don’t work, or the switch mechanism get broken before you even use it.
